 Ann Stephens

Funeral services for Ann Stephens, age 74, of Wadley will be held on Thursday, August 25, 2016, at 2:00 PM from Benefield Funeral Chapel with Rev. Zenus Windsor officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00-8:00 PM on Wednesday, August 24, 2016.

Mrs. Stephens passed away Monday, August 22, 2016, at Wedowee Hospital.

Survivors include her husband, Ronald Stephens of Wadley; one daughter, Debbie McElroy of Jacksonville, AL; one son, Jimmy Stephens of Wadley, AL; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Tommy McWhorter of Alex City and James McWhorter of Florida.

Pallbearers will be Mark Gandy, Mark McWhorter, Brad Stephens, Brian Stephens, Greg Stephens, and Nelson Hay. Honorary pallbearers will be Jimbo Stephens, Leslie Hay, Ronnie Siskey, Jeff McWhorter, and Dale Hay.

A Tallapoosa County native, Mrs. Stephens was born on October 11, 1941, the daughter of Ralph and Mary Huey McWhorter. She was a member of Malone Baptist Church and worked as a secretary for Traylor Tax Service. Mrs. Stephens was preceded in death by her parents.

 Larry Messer

Funeral Services for Larry J. Messer, 72, of Wedowee will be held Wednesday, at 2pm at Ava United Methodist Church with Rev. Paul Messer and Dr. Dan Strain officiating. Burial will follow at the Ava United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral home from 5-8 PM on Tuesday, August 23rd.

Larry passed away on Monday August 22nd at Wedowee Hospital.

Larry was born on January 28, 1944, in Roanoke, Alabama, to Henderson and Kathleen Anderson Messer of Woodland. Larry attended Woodland High School where he was a member of the Varsity Football and Basketball teams. He graduated in 1961 as Salutatorian and went on to attend his beloved Auburn University. Larry graduated in 1966 with honors from the Auburn University College of Pharmacy.

Upon completion of his degree, he worked for Hood Drug in Langdale, Alabama. In 1971 he returned to Randolph County and served as Hospital Administrator for Wedowee Hospital. In 1977 Larry and his business partner, Harold Harmon opened H&M Drugs. In 1984 Larry purchased Wedowee Drug Company and operated it until 1994 when he joined the Harco (now Rite Aid) team. Larry worked in numerous Rite Aid stores in the Anniston, Oxford, and Coldwater areas as well as Roanoke until his retirement in 2012. Even though his career choice was pharmacy, his true passion was raising Black Angus cattle and gardening.

This year Larry celebrated his 50th year as a member of the Alabama Board of Pharmacists. He was a member of the Wedowee Kiwanis Club for 42 years. He was also a member of the Randolph County Cattleman’s Association, Alabama Pharmaceutical Association, a member of Sawyer Masonic Lodge # 93 F&AM, and the Auburn Alumni Association. Larry also served on numerous boards and committees throughout his life.

Larry is survived by his wife of 47 years, Martha Cotter Messer of Wedowee; his son, Bill Messer (wife, Erin) of Smyrna, Ga; his daughter, Beth Messer Bailey (husband, Danny) of Wedowee; 4 grandsons, Hagan and Holden Bailey of Wedowee and Will and Ben Messer of Smyrna; and one sister-in-law, Gerrae Messer of Maryville, TN. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, W. Henderson and Kathleen Anderson Messer of Woodland and one brother, Tim Messer of Maryville, TN.

Pallbearers will be the Woodland High School Class of 1961 and Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Wedowee Kiwanis Club

Memorials may be floral or in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ava United Methodist Church or to the Wedowee Kiwanis Club to provide educational and health support for the children of Randolph County.

U.S. Veteran

Funeral services for Mr. James H. Price, age 79 of Cragford, will be held on Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland with the Reverend Glen Ward officiating. Burial will follow in the Clay County Memory Gardens.

Mr. Price passed away on Monday, August 22, 2016 at the Clay County Hospital. He was a native of Clay County, a graduate of Lineville High School and Jacksonville State University. Mr. Price was a United States Army veteran and served from 1960 until his honorable discharge at the rank of Major in 1972. He was a combat veteran of the Vietnam War. After his return to Clay County, Mr. Price worked for the Social Security Administration for 27 years as a claims representative. He was an avid amateur radio and computer enthusiast and loved anything related to cars. James Howard could often be found watching the races on Sunday afternoon. He was proud of his involvement with the Corinth-Cragford Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Price was a founding member, long time treasurer, one time Clay County fireman of the year, certified Fire Instructor and along with many others devoted countless hours to the Fire Department. He was also a member of Manning’s Chapel Friendship Church.

Mr. Price is survived by his wife of 55 years, Wanda Jordan Price of Cragford; his daughter, Janet Price Smith and son-in-law, Gary Smith of Pell City; his son, David J. Price of Wylie, Texas; his sister, Julia P. Burroughs and brother-in-law, Don Burroughs of Ashland; his grandchildren: Jordan Smith of Dallas, Texas and Adam Smith of Auburn plus one niece and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents: C.B. Price and Vestula Latham Price.

Pallbearers will be Caleb Branch, Eddie Branch, Ethan Branch, Dr. Richard Caldwell, Larry Robertson, Adam Smith and Harold Stanford.

Kermit Caldwell, Hill Latham, the present and former members of Cragford – Corinth Volunteer Fire Department and the men of Manning’s Chapel Friendship Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 from 5:30 until 8:00 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland.

Funeral services for William Homer Young Sr., age 74 of Franklin, GA, formerly of Clay County, will be Saturday, August 20, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland with Rev. Frankie White officiating. Burial will follow in the Clay County Memory Gardens.

Mr. Young passed away on Thursday, August 18, 2016 at the Piedmont – Newnan Hospital. He was a Cleburne County, Alabama native and a former resident of Clay County where he graduated from Mellow Valley High School – Class of 1961. Mr. Young moved to Georgia in 1980 and had worked for Star Packaging Company in College Park. He was a Baptist by faith.

Mr. Young is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carolyn Young of Franklin, GA; three daughters: Donna Gore (Larry) of Franklin, GA, Pamela Young of Alexander City, and Tammy Lee Gladhill (Mike) of Douglasville, GA; one son, William Homer “Bill” Young Jr. of Franklin, GA; two brothers: Douglas Vernon Young (Carolyn) of Cleveland, TN and Charles Eugene Young (Patsy) of Ashland; one sister-in-law, Yvonne Young of Heflin; four grandchildren: Heather Michelle Taylor (Brent), Stephanie Rene Willingham (Josh), D. J. Smith (Sara) and Bobbie Smith; four great-grandchildren: McKenzie McCormick, Alissa Taylor, Hannah Willingham and Gracie Smith.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Homer T. V. Young and Nellie White Young.

Pallbearers will be Josh Willingham, Brent Taylor, Mike Gladhill, Rodney Lowery, Tony Young and Kevin Young.

The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland on Friday, August 19, 2016 from 5:30 until 8:00 p.m.
